Is burning a plant a sin?

Let my prayer be set before you like incense; the lifting up of my hands like the evening sacrifice.

Not inherently. The Bible describes incense in worship and compares prayer with incense. Burning sage or another plant for fragrance or relaxation is not automatically idolatry. Intention and the meaning assigned to the practice matter. A plant should not be treated as more powerful than God, such as claiming it independently expels evil spirits. Smoke can also irritate the lungs, so consider ventilation and others nearby.

Study the original language: Hebrew word study: קְטֹרֶת (*qetoret*) means “incense.” Psalm 141:2 uses incense as a comparison for prayer.
