Did you know Jesus' true bloodline?

Salmon became the father of Boaz by Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed by Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse. Jesse became the father of King David. David the king became the father of Solomon by her who had been Uriah’s wife.

Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, from whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Ruth was a Moabite woman who chose loyalty to Naomi and the God of Israel (Ruth 1:16). She became the great-grandmother of King David: Ruth → Obed → Jesse → David. Matthew traces the royal family line through David and Solomon to Joseph, Mary’s husband, and names Mary as the mother of Jesus. Joseph is not presented as Jesus’ biological father. God’s redemptive story includes the faith and courage of women and people from different nations.

Why Ruth’s story matters — and the women in the genealogy
  • Ruth — The Moabite pledged loyalty to Naomi and the God of Israel, and became David’s great-grandmother (Ruth 1:16; 4:17, 22).
  • Women in Matthew’s genealogy — Matthew names Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, the wife of Uriah (Bathsheba), and Mary (Matthew 1:3, 5–6, 16).
  • The royal line — Matthew traces the recorded line through David and Solomon to Joseph, the husband of Mary. Jesus was born of Mary; Matthew 1:16 does not call Joseph his biological father.
  • The invitation — Ruth’s place in the story illustrates that faithful people from different nations are included in the story of God’s promises.
